Sacred Sunday One Day Retreat #2

Well, I’m happy to report we did it all over again. For a second time we nailed it, finis’d it, slammed it, etc., dialing in a second standout Higher Haven Sunday. Once again the ageless, ancient endeavors of Yoga, Meditation and Ceremony came together in a powerfully and magically fuse, creating an intimate group of new tribal members of The Higher Haven Retreat Center. Many thanks to Adrienne, Caitlin, Ericka, Jaron, Luke, Nikki, Matu, and our other new relatives who spent the day deep in both nature and spiritual practice (thanks also to Maya and Shiah, young reps. of future generations who discovered the two best hammock-hanging trees on the property). There’s just something about being seated together in the dark earth-womb of a traditional Lodge that rebirths us like no other healing modality. The drumming, singing and sweet herbal scents combine to peal away heartache and traumas just as they  empower folks to confront fears and unconscious resistances, bringing people to a collective new place in a truly beautiful way.

A very special thanks goes out to Alicia Dawn Smith of Kalamazoo’s Infinite Bliss and Bodywork, who kicked off the day in a mighty way, leading us in a lovely hour- long flow to the soothing sounds of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. “During my yoga classes, I will guide you through things that have worked for me in the past to find freedom, inner peace, and transcendental bliss,” she tells us. “I accentuate the spiritual” (and she does). “If you’re looking for a sweet ride that aims to unite your mind, body and spirit, I am your girl. I love this stuff. I use it daily. It is deep. It is physical. And still, it is beyond physical.” True. A deep bow to Alicia D. for helping us all polish up our amazing, brilliant true natures. Someone once described her work as a loving invitation to come back to balance. A loving invitation to come back to balance. And it was.

We’ll continue bringing together groups of like-minded, like-hearted practitioners in the spirit of modern Tribalism. Do you know why so many people harken to the tribal in our day and age? With the very fabric of our reality fraying, as the culture and institutions of the modern world decline, our society will continue looking to and embracing the organizational principles of the distant past for guidance. Modern tribalism is a sociological concept which postulates that human beings have evolved to live in tribal society, as opposed to mass society, and thus will naturally form social networks constituting new “Tribes”. A tribe draws on collective strength and individual gifts in order to survive and thrive. Given the potential collapse of modern civilization, we’re rediscovering the power and spirit of Matakuye O’yasin, as we ARE all related, sharing a common ancestry, as well as the hope for a recreated culture and authentic leadership. A large, loving family sharing interests and healthy habits, all in a serious bid to raise the vibratory awareness of all of humanity. Won’t you join us?

It’s exciting and we’re certainly excited to do it again all Summer and Fall, with Higher Haven Sunday #3 scheduled for July 17th at 11 a.m., lead by Teresa Van Eyk of Saugatuck’s Satya Yoga. Adrienne White of Karma Yoga Fest fame will also be kicking us off and leading us in asana practice on Sunday morning July 31st. If you’d like to know more, message me for details. Looking forward to seeing you and being in Ceremony together. Aho Wakan Takan kici un. May Creator, the Great Grandfather Spirit bless you and keep you until then. Toksha.

Sacred Sunday #3 - Summer 2016

Wild Things ~ You Make My Heart Sing  ~ You Make Everything Groovy

Wild Things ~ You Make My Heart Sing  ~ You Make Everything Groovy

Cake, candles, and silent wishes considered, we celebrated a couple of very special, very unconventional birthdays at The Higher Haven a couple weeks back. Heather Winia and her sister Lisa Permesang came out and spent the day along with friends Tracy and Jason, Theresa, Sheri, Reneè, Anne, and our mighty anchor, Rock Man Johny Blue. Heather resides as a tribal member of The World Groove Movement, a group whose mission is to inspire and assist in the elevation of global consciousness, creativity, and vibrant health by giving people the permission and the space to be authentic and dance THEIR DANCE! In her own words:

“I am a LOVER of all things that Embody Beauty in this LIFE… the amazing outdoor environment in which we live, the uplifting spirit that lives within each and every one of us and the blessed uniqueness of our hearts, minds and bodies. Time disappears when I get to share these passions with others…especially on the DANCE floor! I feel blessed daily that I get to guide MEANINGFUL movement, foster FREEDOM from restrictions, ignite VIBRANCY and LOVE for a healthy life and self all while providing a safe, fun and happy place to be AUTHENTICALLY YOU! Let’s GROOVE!

No doubt. I love Heather because she’s an extremely unorthodox teacher of movement with a very solid, very cool following in Western Michigan, a following she’s clearly worked hard to establish. Our wooded paths crossed earlier this year when a friend informed me of  an outstanding outdoor exercise class that meets on Monday nights in Holland at local parks and beaches. The hellacious hills of dune stairs and stone platforms offered by  these sites are ideal for seriously getting your sweat on with box jumps, step routines, tricep dips and a number of other inventive kicks, crawls and pumps.

Summer took us out onto the beach and into the lake for scenic views that outshine the lookout from any urban gym. I shared an article with her focused on fitness groups that gather at iconic spots and National Landmarks because the vibe expressed by one of the organizers is exactly the same: “It creates a sentimental way to connect with your city. There’s a romantic component to it, you’re working out, endorphins are flowing, and you’re meeting cool new people.” It was a pleasure having our Monday night crew over to  introduce them to innovative meditative techniques coupled with an ancient healing modality of serious power.

Yoga, GROOVE, meditation, great grinds and traditional Ceremony turned out to be a killer combination. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, folks reporting a sense of serenity and ease after having taken part in a spiritual purification experience that for most kicked it up or pleasantly down a notch. I’m looking forward to working with Heather coordinating more groups this Fall to take part in, again in her words, this deeply personal spiritual connection with your amazing self. True. Toksha, Until the Next

Higher Haven Sunday #4 ~ Summer 2016

Higher Haven Sunday #4 ~ Summer 2016

HHSSNo.4 went off at the end of August like a grand finale of late Summer fireworks, the final Sunday class bringing our opening Spring season to a successful close with four hits, four runs and roughly forty fans stepping up to take part in the initial Higher Haven retreat experience. I like the baseball analogy, given that a consistent at-bat - a quality at-bat - were the attainable goals of this rookie season. Having planned eight one-day retreat days - a bit ambitious in retrospect - we successfully performed four workshops, which has us batting .500 and heading into the Fall exemplary energy players ready to rally.

Family also played a role in making this gathering feel, well, more like family. "Family comes first" my Native American Teacher was fond of saying, a dictum not necessarily spoken from a place of privilege. More the contrary, as Chief Crazybull suffered the harsh traumas of being brought up in the Indian Boarding School system. When I recently heard a Catholic Priest open his sermon with,"There is an old Chinese maxim that states: No family can hang out the placard declaring: 'Nothing is the matter here'", I was well reminded of the challenges every one of usface in the fight for personal freedom, given our family of origin identities.

All that said, out of both care and a I think a healthy curiosity, my dear, old friend Allison aka Addy aka Big Al Hayes made the jaunt up from suburban Chicago that Sunday, bringing her eleven-year-old son Adam, along with niece Hillary and nephew Danny. According to his Mom, Adam is "a very deep boy with a lot of questions", a young seeker who took in the woods and frog-filled creeks all around the property. "If a relative of mine owned this land, I would frequent it often", Adam declared, a proclamation I was happy to hear and hope to uphold, as both land steward and preservationist for future generations.

Hillary is a lovely human being and my one-woman big city focus group. Having taken part in group meditation practice and Transcendental Meditation (TM) training, she thoroughly enjoyed the day and responded favorably to the spiritual purification teaching. "Sunday was awesome," she shared. "It was really was one of the coolest things I've done! I can't stop talking about it... I will definitely be sending people your way and already can't wait until next summer. Thanks for everything!" Thank YOU Hilary, and Al, and Adam, and Danny and Rebecca and Kelly and Teresa and every one of the Oyates (people) who ventured out to the trusty woods and banks of the Black River to make our Sundays circles ones of shared community success. After the heat of Indian Summer passes and the pressures of September's mercury retrograde ease, we'll be announcing our exciting October events and other happenings for the upcoming, introspective Fall season. We look forward to seeing and practicing with you all. Toksha, Until then.
